James Kirkwood, the first keeper, was appointed by the colonial court to tend the lights in 1771. He was thought to be a Tory sympathizer and was forcibly taken off the island by Gloucester militiamen in November 1775. He had been hired for two and a half years at “a salary of 100 pounds six shillings and firewood.” (Courtesy National Archives and Records Administration.)

In 1773, Kirkwood complained in this letter that he was owed 100 pounds salary, past due, for himself and his two assistants for 18 months of work from Massachusetts Bay governor Thomas Hutchinson.
